In light of personnel shortages, NSW will offer refresher training in hospitality.

 In response to ongoing worker shortages, the New South Wales (NSW) Liquor and Gaming Authority has announced that free hospitality refresher courses will be offered through 2023.

 This has ramifications for the state's gaming business, which is still dealing with the possibility of a competitive employment market after many employees quit because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

 "Many people who left the industry saw their mandatory certifications expire," stated NSW Minister of Racing and Hospitality Kevin Anderson.  "We want to remove any obstacles preventing those individuals from re-entering the hospitality industry and make it simple for them to swiftly and freely renew those certifications."

 According to Anderson, the refresher courses would guarantee that employees in the alcohol and gaming sectors maintain a high standard of training.

 "Those who work or volunteer where alcohol is sold, such as security, crowd control, and promotional staff, also need a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate; it's not just bar and wait staff," he stated.  "The Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate is no exception; if you work near poker machines, you must receive specialised training to recognise and reduce gambling harm."

 The minister was congratulated for the idea by John Green, director of spirits and policing for the Australian Hotels Association NSW.

 "We would especially encourage older workers with their years of experience to step back behind the bar because it is easier for those who worked in the industry to return and pick up a few shifts at their local," Green added.

 According to the Authority, more than 16,000 persons have finished its free RSA and RCG refresher courses since February.

 NSW declared last week that the state's point-of-consumption tax would be raised to 15%.
