A bill that would enable tribes to bring legal action against cardrooms in California

 On Tuesday, more than 100 demonstrators, including cardroom staff and local mayors, flocked to Sacramento to voice their opposition to Senate Bill SB 549, often known as the Tribal Nations Access to Justice Act.

 According to the bill, California tribes could file lawsuits against privately held cardrooms on the grounds that they are infringing on their rights.  In California, Indian Country is the only place to play at casinos that resemble Las Vegas.  The general assembly is considering the bill.

 Banners with the words "Bad Bet For California" and "No on SB 549!" were carried by the demonstrators.  The audience also started chanting, "We're not fine with 549."  Local legislators and civic officials spoke to the crowd about the bill's potential negative effects on California cardrooms.

 After the Assembly Governmental Organisation Committee voted in favour of the bill on Tuesday, July 3, it proceeded.

 "SB 549 is a bill that will negatively harm many of our cities that have cardrooms located in their communities," stated Marcel Rodarte, executive director of the California Contracts Cities Association, during the demonstration.  Because they create jobs, cardrooms are an essential component of our cities.

 The format of some games is the main point of contention.  The question at hand is whether the cardrooms are getting around the rule that forbids them from acting as the "bank" or the "house."

 According to the California Gambling Association, SB 549's passing might result in the loss of about 32,000 employment.  The measure may force cardrooms in California to reduce their size and close.  Cardrooms have been actively opposing the law through lobbying.

 In 2023, the Los Angeles County-based Hawaiian Gardens Casino spent $9.1 million on lobbying.  Of all the lobbying groups that submitted reports to state authorities, that is the second-highest total.  Chevron Corporation, a multinational oil business, spent the most.

 During the demonstration, Tasha Cerda, the mayor of the City of Gardena, stated, "Our two cardrooms have been the backbone of our community as they will provide vital tax services that our city uses to fund vital public services which allow us to provide a better quality of life for our residents and communities."  More than 1,200 locals and those from the neighbouring areas work in our cardrooms.  That amounts to wages of more than $47 million annually.
